As the most walkable senior living community in Rochester, we are physically connected to Mayo Clinic and the downtown area via a climate controlled pedestrian skyway and subway system.  This gives you access to downtown shops, banks, restaurants, the Mayo Civic Center, the Government Center, and Rochester Public Library year-round. Do residents own their Charter House apartment?

Charter House residents do not own their apartment. This means there are no real estate taxes, property taxes, or assessment fees!

What does CCRC mean?

CCRC stands for Continuing Care Retirement Community. A Continuing Care Retirement Community brings together in one location, a diverse selection of resident choices, lifestyle options, services, healthcare, and amenities.

At Charter House, continuing care also means an emphasis on wellness, helping you remain as healthy and active as possible. Furthermore, as a CCRC, we continue to meet the needs of our residents as your needs change over time.

What is the relationship between Charter House and Mayo Clinic?

Charter House is not-for-profit and owned and operated by Mayo Clinic. Just like St. Marys Hospital and Rochester Methodist Hospital, Charter House is governed by Mayo Clinic. Visit the Mayo Clinic website for more information.

Can only Mayo Clinic employees or retirees live at Charter House?

You do not have to be a current or former Mayo Clinic employee in order to live at Charter House.

Who lives at Charter House? Is it just Rochester residents?

Charter House is home to about 350 residents. Approximately 65% are from Minnesota and 35% have come from all over the country.

Can I enter directly into Assisted Living or Supportive Living?

Charter House residents must live in our Independent Living apartments before they can access the services of our Assisted Living or Supportive Living Centers.  When you are one of our residents, you will have the peace of mind knowing Charter House health care services are available to you, if you ever need them.
